The Department of Justice has filed denaturalization actions against 40 naturalized citizens, marking the largest coordinated initiative of its kind during the current administration. These legal filings, submitted in federal courts between August 21 and October 2, target individuals accused of serious criminal offenses, including espionage, voluntary manslaughter, and acting as agents for foreign governments.
Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, the government may seek to revoke citizenship if it is proven that status was obtained through the willful misrepresentation or concealment of material facts. Officials state that these proceedings are intended to address security risks posed by individuals who allegedly falsified information during the naturalization process.
This action follows a 2025 departmental directive to expand the criteria for denaturalization and increase the frequency of such cases. While historically limited by resource requirements, the current administration has signaled that this initiative represents an ongoing effort to utilize judicial revocation as a component of broader national security and immigration enforcement strategies.
