France Closes 400 Schools Amid Escalating Student Protests, Staff Injuries

French authorities have ordered the closure or partial suspension of operations at over 400 schools for the coming week, citing persistent security concerns. This decision follows a wave of student-led protests, which have resulted in 24 schools being damaged and 78 staff members sustaining injuries, according to Education Minister Édouard Geffray.

The unrest has prompted more than 5,000 arrests, primarily of minors, since the demonstrations began last week. Officials noted the violence has reached unprecedented levels, including targeted assaults on educators, an element never seen before in such protests.

Protest Roots and Infiltration Claims

Government assessments indicate that the protests, initially focused on grievances over education funding and infrastructure, have been infiltrated by external political agitators. These groups are accused of hijacking the movement to incite extreme violence, complicating the administration's efforts to restore order.

One incident involved a 59-year-old teacher in La Ciotat who was doused with gasoline and struck during a protest. Authorities detained a 16-year-old in connection with the assault.

Broader Government Challenges

Beyond student grievances regarding facility conditions, such as overcrowded classes and dilapidated buildings, the government faces broader pressure. Trade unions initiated strikes last week, demanding fiscal policy revisions and a potential wealth tax, and have called for continued demonstrations.
