Imran Khan's Sons Allege Health Deterioration in Prison

The sons of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, stated on August 28 that their 73-year-old father's health has significantly deteriorated. They attributed this decline to prolonged solitary confinement and restricted access to medical care. Mr. Khan, who has been held at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail since his removal from office in 2022, faces more than 100 legal charges, including allegations of bribery.

Conversely, the Pakistan Ministry of Information and Broadcasting formally refuted these claims, asserting that Mr. Khan has consistently received regular medical attention. The Ministry urged against politicizing health matters and denied any failure to comply with Supreme Court directives or medical care being withheld.

Family Concerns Over Prison Conditions

Sulaiman Khan, aged 29, described his father as agitated and suffering from severe anxiety, leading to heart palpitations and a spiking heart rate. Both sons noted that they have not had direct communication with their father since March. The family and Mr. Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), allege that he is enduring psychological distress during his incarceration.

Earlier reports from February by Mr. Khan's legal representatives indicated that he had lost 85 percent of the vision in his right eye. Despite these concerns, the government statement emphasized that Mr. Khan remains in stable condition and has undergone 30 medical examinations since his detention began.

Supreme Court Orders and Compliance Issues

On August 18, the Supreme Court had issued directives for Mr. Khan's transfer to Shifa International Hospital, mandated weekly family visits, and allowed him twice-weekly phone calls with his sons. The court also stipulated that his personal physician and sister, both medical professionals, should be permitted to participate in his medical care.

However, Mr. Khan was briefly assessed at a government hospital, PIMS, before being returned to jail on August 20. This sequence of events prompted his legal team to file a contempt petition, arguing that the Supreme Court's orders had not been fully implemented. The ongoing legal challenges underscore the strained relationship between the current government and Mr. Khan's political movement.

International Calls for Intervention

International pressure regarding Mr. Khan's release continues to mount.
