US Navy Initiates Development of Compact Air

The US Navy has issued a request for information regarding the development of the Silent Anvil Air-Launched Torpedo (SAA-LT). This initiative aims to produce a weapon significantly smaller than existing anti-submarine capabilities, such as the Mark 54 torpedo equipped with the High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapon Capability (HAAWC) glide kit.

Specifications for the proposed torpedo include a maximum weight of 268 pounds and dimensions of 70 inches in length and 7.5 inches in diameter. These requirements are designed to increase the number of crewed and uncrewed platforms capable of deploying anti-submarine ordnance from stand-off ranges.

The project seeks to ensure compatibility with existing aircraft carrier storage and handling infrastructure. This development reflects a strategic shift to counter the expansion of foreign submarine fleets by diversifying the range of naval and aerial platforms capable of conducting anti-submarine warfare.
