A Royal Navy intelligence specialist faces charges under the National Security Act 2023 for allegedly accessing classified defense and intelligence data and attempting to transmit it to Russian authorities. This marks the first prosecution of a British armed forces member under the legislation, which came into force in December 2023.
Teddy Young, a 24-year-old junior intelligence specialist, was deployed on a warship when the alleged offenses occurred. He is accused of preparing to disclose protected information between November 26, 2024, and May 21, 2025.
Security Breach on Warship Authorities first arrested Young in May 2025 Authorities first arrested Young in May 2025, leading to his suspension from duties. He was subsequently remanded in custody after a court determined he posed both a flight risk and a threat of reoffending, according to legal proceedings. The case highlights potential vulnerabilities within the Ministry of Defence's high-level security clearance protocols. Counter-terrorism officials have collaborated with military leadership to address security risks arising from the alleged breach. Trial Scheduled for October The Crown Prosecution Service stated that Young not only prepared for disclosure but also obtained, copied, recorded, or retained protected information during the same period, intending for this conduct to benefit a foreign power. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing London.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized the seriousness of the charges against a serving armed forces member. Young is scheduled to appear before a specialist judge at the Old Bailey on October 16.
The charges against Young are not connected to another recent investigation concerning an incident at RAF Fairford, according to official statements.
