Indonesia to import Russian crude oil in 2026 deal

Indonesia will import 150 million barrels of crude oil from Russia this year , Deputy Energy Minister Yuliot Tanjung said on Friday, April 24. Officials said the planned volume is intended to cover Indonesia’s crude oil requirements through the end of the year, as the government works to manage domestic energy shortages.

The announcement followed a meeting in Moscow last week between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Officials described the talks as part of efforts to secure additional energy supply, with the import arrangement positioned as one component of Indonesia’s broader push to ensure stable availability for the domestic market.

Officials said the mechanism for bringing the Russian crude into Indonesia is still being finalized. The deputy minister did not provide further operational details, and the timeline for completing the import process was not specified beyond the plan to meet needs until year-end.

Indonesia is seeking to widen its range of energy suppliers as it works to meet demand. The country imports about 1 million barrels of crude oil per day, according to the information provided. Officials indicated that the 150 million barrels from Russia would cover only part of that requirement, and that Jakarta is continuing to pursue additional crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies from other countries.

Officials also pointed to the United States as one of the alternative sources being pursued. They said a deal for oil and gas purchases has been secured under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, underscoring Indonesia’s approach of combining multiple supply channels rather than relying on a single partner.

On LPG, officials said the volume to be imported from Russia has not yet been decided. That leaves a key element of the broader energy-supply plan unresolved, even as Indonesia continues discussions aimed at strengthening supply stability amid shifting global energy market conditions.
