EU Committee Begins Review of Far-Right Party’s Status

A newly formed Committee of Independent Eminent Persons began discussions on Thursday to assess whether the far-right Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) political party should be removed from the registry and lose its European Union financial support. This committee will provide recommendations to the Authority for European Political Parties and Foundations regarding potential breaches of fundamental European values by the party.

The European Parliament gave its approval in July for the process to deregister and defund ESN. The Authority for European Political Parties and Foundations had alleged breaches of EU values, including anti-immigration, antisemitic, and anti-LGBT rhetoric.

The six-member committee, comprising legal experts and former officials, was appointed through a joint process involving the European Commission, the Council, and the European Parliament. Their directive is to thoroughly examine the ESN party’s conduct against established European principles.

However, the selection of committee members has attracted criticism, with questions raised about the political affiliations of some appointees. Alexander Sell, vice president of the Europe of Sovereign Nations, stated that people with clear political affiliations were appointed.

These concerns highlight potential conflicts of interest and doubts regarding the impartiality of the review process.
