Australian Police Charge Dual Citizen with Foreign Interference Attempt

Australian authorities charged Vladimir Teslov, a 27-year-old dual Russian-Australian citizen, with attempted foreign interference on Friday. The charges follow an investigation into the unauthorized sharing of Ukrainian military intelligence.

Teslov was arrested in Brisbane by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) after an inquiry, dubbed Operation Woodcreeper, identified alleged efforts to transmit sensitive data about Ukrainian military personnel and unit locations. This information was reportedly intended for individuals suspected of being Russian intelligence operatives.

The investigation asserts that Teslov, who joined the Ukrainian armed forces in May 2023, used his position to access restricted military information. Authorities further allege that after his return to Australia, he maintained contact with individuals he believed were linked to Russian intelligence services. These actions, according to authorities, posed a direct security risk to Ukrainian personnel, leading to the seizure of electronic devices during searches of properties in Brisbane.

Broader Implications of Charges

This case marks the eighth instance of foreign interference charges laid in Australia since the relevant legislation was introduced, and the first to involve alleged ties to Russia. While the accused faces a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment, officials have stated there is no indication of an immediate threat to Australian domestic security.

The AFP's investigation remains active, focusing on determining whether Teslov acted independently or as part of a larger recruitment network. Teslov was denied bail and is scheduled for a court reappearance on October 2.
