Australia Charges Dual Citizen with Espionage for Ukrainian Data Transfer

Australian authorities have charged a 27-year-old dual Russian-Australian citizen with foreign interference, alleging he attempted to transmit sensitive Ukrainian military data to Russian intelligence. The suspect, who was arrested following a joint investigation by the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, is scheduled to appear in a Brisbane court on Friday.

Training in Russia Preceded Ukrainian Enlistment Police allege the individual traveled to Russia for training in October 2024 before enlisting in the Ukrainian military in May 2025. During his service, the suspect reportedly accessed information regarding Ukrainian military personnel, units, and operational locations. He subsequently shared this data with contacts he believed were acting on behalf of Moscow, a move officials stated directly compromised the safety of Ukrainian military staff.
