PLA Deploys Laser-Equipped Vehicles for Counter-Drone Operations

The People’s Liberation Army has integrated laser-based directed energy weapons onto its Type 19 amphibious 8x8 combat vehicle platform. These modifications, observed on vehicles assigned to the Eastern Theatre Command, include enhanced sensor suites designed to neutralize uncrewed aerial systems and loitering munitions.

This deployment targets the threat of drone swarms during amphibious landing operations, providing mobile air defense for mechanized forces during critical sea-to-shore transitions.

Amphibious Integration Challenges

Technical integration challenges persist regarding the platform's amphibious performance and the durability of sensitive laser components in maritime environments. Timothy Heath, founder of defense consultancy Perceptum and a former senior China analyst, noted the difficulty in assessing how modifications affect the Type 19's amphibious capabilities without further technical data.

Heath indicated that operating the laser system while afloat "should be possible," though factors such as added weight and saltwater protection would need addressing.

He highlighted its potential effectiveness against drone swarms that Taiwanese forces might employ to target amphibious vehicles. The integration of these systems reflects a broader strategic shift within the PLA toward hardening frontline assets against asymmetric, drone-centric warfare tactics.
