Pennsylvania Holds Key Primary Elections

Pennsylvania voters participated in primary elections on May 19, determining candidates for the upcoming November midterm elections. These primaries are significant for both state and national politics, particularly as they will influence the control of the U.S. Congress during President Donald Trump's second term.

The state utilizes a closed primary system, requiring voters to be registered with a party to cast ballots in that party's primary. Polls were open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM local time. Key races include the gubernatorial contest, where incumbent Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro is running unopposed, and State Treasurer Stacy Garrity is the unchallenged Republican candidate. However, a write-in campaign for former Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano has emerged against Garrity, who has received an endorsement from former President Trump.

Additionally, all 17 of Pennsylvania's seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election, with all but one incumbent seeking re-election. The state Democratic Party aims to secure majorities in both houses of the state legislature, with all state House seats and half of the state Senate seats contested.
