Russian Strikes Kill 5 Across Ukraine, Officials Say

Russian missile and drone attacks hit major Ukrainian cities early Tuesday, June 2, 2026, killing at least five people and injuring dozens, Ukrainian officials said. The strikes struck Kyiv, Dnipro and the Kharkiv region after days of public warnings from Ukrainian leaders about the risk of a large-scale Russian assault. Officials reported damage to apartment buildings and other civilian sites.

In Dnipro, four people were killed and 16 were injured, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said. He said the injured were hospitalized and in moderate condition. He also reported heavy damage to residential buildings, vehicles and a children’s playground.

In Kyiv, officials said at least one person was killed and 29 were injured across the capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a suspected missile strike caused part of a 24-story apartment building to collapse, and he warned people could be trapped in the rubble. He said other buildings, including a nine-story apartment block, caught fire from suspected missile debris.

In the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine, 10 people, including a child, were injured in drone and missile strikes, officials said.

Warnings of a larger assault

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had reiterated warnings that a major Russian strike was possible and urged residents to pay close attention to air raid alerts. Ukrainian officials have said they had been bracing for an intensified attack for days.

Russia has said it planned “systematic strikes” on targets in Kyiv that it described as linked to the Ukrainian military and decision-making centers. Russian officials said the planned strikes were in response to a drone strike last month on a dormitory in Russian-held Luhansk, an attack Ukraine denied carrying out.

Damage reports and broader context

Ukrainian authorities said the latest attacks damaged multiple residential buildings in Kyiv and Dnipro. Klitschko said falling missile debris also sparked fires in the capital.

The fighting has continued for more than four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both sides deny targeting civilians, even as air strikes and long-range attacks have hit urban areas and critical infrastructure.

Officials have not provided a full accounting of damage across the country, and additional information may emerge as emergency crews assess strike sites.
