Tornado Damages 300 French Homes, Injures 39 in Southwest
A tornado struck Pomas, France, injuring 39 people and damaging 300 homes, with 2 in critical condition. Infrastructure disruptions occurred.

A powerful tornado ripped through Pomas, a village in southwestern France, on Monday, resulting in injuries to 39 individuals and significant damage to approximately 300 residential properties. The severe weather event prompted the deployment of 120 emergency service personnel to the area near Carcassonne, where wind speeds were recorded at 117 kilometers per hour (73 miles per hour).
Among those injured, 15 required hospitalization, and two individuals were reported to be in critical condition. Local authorities confirmed that no residents are currently missing following the destructive storm. The tornado caused extensive damage not only to homes but also to historical structures in the affected region.
Regional Weather Disruptions
The tornado struck after Météo-France had issued an orange alert, signaling a high risk of severe thunderstorms across the region. This meteorological instability also led to broader disruptions. The third stage of the Vuelta a España cycle race was canceled due to heavy hail, highlighting the widespread nature of the severe weather.
Infrastructure suffered significantly, with the storm leaving 2,800 households without electricity across ten villages. Transport networks also experienced secondary impacts, including flight delays at major hubs such as Bordeaux, Marseille, and Toulouse. These disruptions underscored the storm's extensive reach beyond the immediate tornado impact zone.
Ongoing Recovery Efforts
Currently, recovery operations are underway as crews work to clear debris and assess the structural integrity of damaged buildings. The immediate focus remains on ensuring public safety, restoring essential services, and providing support to those affected by the destruction. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and coordinate aid.
France, while not immune to tornadoes, typically experiences them less frequently and with less intensity compared to other parts of the world. However, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for severe weather events to cause widespread damage and disruption, even in regions where they are less common. The long-term recovery for Pomas and surrounding areas will involve significant rebuilding and support for affected residents.
