Russia Halts Kenyan Recruitment for Ukraine Conflict Russia has agreed to cease recruiting Kenyan nationals for military service in the conflict in Ukraine, following discussions between Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. This agreement, announced by Mudavadi, stipulates that Kenyans will no longer be eligible for enlistment through the Russian Ministry of Defence.

The development addresses concerns raised by a Kenyan intelligence report in February, which indicated over 1,000 Kenyan citizens had been recruited to fight for Russia.

The agreement follows reports that some Kenyans were allegedly lured into fighting under false pretenses of civilian employment. Mudavadi stated that 27 Kenyans who had been fighting for Russia have already been repatriated and are receiving psychological support. While Lavrov did not directly comment on the recruitment halt, he maintained that all foreign enlistments, including Kenyans, were voluntary and in compliance with Russian law.

Public pressure in Kenya, including protests by families of those believed to be fighting, contributed to the diplomatic engagement. Mudavadi also indicated intentions to negotiate broader access for Kenyans to the Russian job market, aiming to expand the bilateral relationship beyond the immediate conflict. Ukrainian intelligence estimates suggest more than 1,700 individuals from 36 African countries have been recruited by Russia for the conflict.
