Rockstar sees faster development after 8-year GTA 6 cycle
Development heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut pointed to reusable technology and shared expertise, while the next Rockstar project remains unconfirmed.

Rockstar Games development heads said in an Oct. 14 ComicBook trade-press article that Grand Theft Auto 6's tools should speed later projects after an eight-year gap from Red Dead Redemption 2.
The stakes are simple for players: Rockstar’s cadence now looks far slower than its early 2000s run, when Grand Theft Auto 3 arrived in 2001, Vice City in 2002 and San Andreas in 2004.
In the article, which cited a Bloomberg feature, head of development Phil Hooker said the studio had built reusable production muscle during GTA 6. “The engine, the tools, and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” Hooker said. “I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content.”
Aaron Garbut, also identified as a head of development, said the long project had left the team with “shared understanding, shared knowledge, and a sort of shortcut to questions.” He added: “We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.”
The argument echoes Rockstar’s earlier reuse of technology and production foundations across the PlayStation 2-era GTA releases. ComicBook framed GTA 3 as the base that helped enable faster follow-ups, while also noting that modern games carry far higher asset quality and complexity.
The article attributed GTA 6’s long cycle to several factors discussed in the Bloomberg material: Red Dead Redemption 2 took longer than expected, Rockstar expanded after that game shipped, pandemic-era remote work complicated production, crunch was reduced and directorial duties were split. ComicBook said Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier described remote work as likely adding a year to development.
What comes next is still uncertain. The supplied material does not confirm Rockstar’s next title, does not give a development timeline and does not provide a release date for GTA 6 beyond saying it is near release.
