Pound Drops Amid UK Political Uncertainty

The British pound experienced its most significant weekly decline in 18 months on Friday, November 8, 2024, falling against the U.S. dollar due to increased political uncertainty in the United Kingdom. This depreciation was primarily driven by speculation surrounding a potential leadership challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer by Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

Sterling dropped by nearly three cents, or 2%, during the week, reaching $1.336, its lowest point in five weeks. This marks the largest weekly fall against the U.S. dollar since November 2024. Concurrently, UK government borrowing costs rose, with the yield on 10-year bonds increasing to almost 5.17%, the highest level since 2008. Thirty-year bond yields also climbed to 5.84%, reflecting investor concerns over potential shifts in fiscal policy under a new leadership.

The market reaction follows Andy Burnham's announcement of his intention to run for parliament in the Makerfield constituency, signaling a potential return to Westminster and a challenge for the Labour Party leadership. Analysts suggest that investors perceive Burnham as less market-friendly due to past statements regarding fiscal rules and government borrowing. The increased political risk premium is expected to contribute to continued volatility in UK financial assets and sterling for an extended period.
