Israeli forces conducted an airstrike in Gaza City, targeting and reportedly killing Izz ad-Din al-Haddad, a commander in Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades. The strike occurred in the center of Gaza City, impacting a residential building and a vehicle approximately 1.5 kilometers away, according to eyewitnesses. This action transpired despite a ceasefire agreement that came into effect on October 10.
The operation involved three missiles simultaneously striking the Al-Mu'taz residential building, followed by a second strike on a fleeing car. Eyewitnesses reported a large fire and difficulties for rescue teams. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yisrael Katz stated Haddad was responsible for actions on October 7. Hamas has not confirmed or denied the commander's death.
This incident follows ongoing Israeli strikes in Gaza since the ceasefire, during which 857 fatalities have been reported by the Hamas-run health ministry. Israel maintains its right to target Hamas members, accusing the group of breaching ceasefire terms by refusing to disarm. U.S.-led peace efforts, including plans for Gaza's governance and demilitarization, remain stalled amid these continued hostilities.
