China, U.S. Discuss Trump Summit Beijing, China – China confirmed on Monday that it is in communication with the United States regarding President Donald Trump's upcoming visit, scheduled for March 31 to April 2. This confirmation follows Trump's recent remarks suggesting a potential delay in the trip over concerns about the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that both sides are actively communicating about the visit, emphasizing the critical role of head-of-state diplomacy in guiding China-U.S. relations. Trump had indicated a preference to understand Beijing's stance on securing the Strait of Hormuz, through which China imports a significant portion of its oil, before proceeding with the summit.
Additionally, Beijing signaled that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expected to accompany Trump, would be permitted entry despite sanctions imposed on him in 2020. Lin clarified that these sanctions were directed at Rubio's past statements and actions during his tenure as a U.S. Senator concerning Hong Kong and Xinjiang, implying they would not impede his current travel as part of the official delegation.
