China beats Thailand 2-0 to reach junior badminton final

China beat Thailand 2-0 on October 9 in Cairo to reach the Badminton World Federation World Junior Team Championships final, according to a The Star report citing Bernama-Xinhua.

The result set up an October 10 title match against Malaysia, which also won its semifinal 2-0, defeating Indonesia earlier on October 9, according to the report.

The semifinal was played at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex under the tournament’s relay scoring format, in which players contest five badminton disciplines and team points are aggregated across the tie.

China had to recover after falling behind early, the report said. Yin Yiqing, an 18-year-old Chinese player, told Xinhua the format had been a focus in training. “We had prepared thoroughly for the team competition format and practiced it many times during training,” she said.

Yin said she was able to manage the tempo after entering with China trailing. “I think I performed quite well today. I was able to stay in control of the match, manage the pace effectively, and put into practice what I had worked on in training,” she said.

Luo Jingyu, also 18, said he had found the men’s singles opening difficult and described Thailand as a strong opponent. “If I get the chance to play, I will give it my all and fight for every point. I hope Team China can achieve a great result in the end,” Luo said of the final.

The team event, known as the Suhandinata Cup, runs from October 5 to October 10 in Cairo and is scheduled to be followed by the individual championships. The report did not provide individual match scores or final lineups.
