A multi-year investigation by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office has identified nearly 1,000 instances of child sexual abuse involving over 270 Catholic clergy members. The findings cover decades of institutional conduct across the Fall River, Springfield, and Worcester dioceses, concluding that church leadership was aware of the abuse but failed to implement effective preventative measures.
The investigation resulted in no new indictments, as officials cited expired statutes of limitations and the fact that certain historical conduct did not meet the legal definition of criminal activity at the time of occurrence. Three cases were referred to district attorney offices, resulting in a single criminal charge.
This report marks the first public accounting of institutional failures within these specific dioceses. While the findings highlight significant governance and oversight lapses, the lack of legal recourse underscores the limitations of current criminal statutes in addressing historical institutional abuse. Diocesan leadership has been urged to adopt further reforms to strengthen child protection protocols.
