Brexit Reversal: UK Rejoining EU Gains Majority Support

A recent Ipsos poll indicates a substantial shift in public opinion regarding the United Kingdom's relationship with the European Union. More than half of all British adults now believe the UK should rejoin the EU, reversing the sentiment observed during the 2016 Brexit referendum.

This survey, conducted among 1,137 British adults from May 14 to May 20, found 52% in favor of rejoining. In contrast, only 33% expressed a desire to remain outside the EU, with a significant segment still undecided.

Shifting Public Sentiment

Support for a new referendum is also considerable, with nearly half of respondents indicating their approval. This segment is divided on whether such a vote should occur before or after the upcoming general election, highlighting an ongoing public debate.

Keiran Pedley, Ipsos's director of politics, noted that these figures demonstrate a discernible change in the public mood. He emphasized that the discussion surrounding the UK's relationship with Europe remains an active consideration for the electorate.

Generational and Political Divides

Despite the growing support for rejoining the EU, opinions continue to diverge significantly along both generational and political lines. Younger voters predominantly express a preference for reversing the Brexit decision, while a notable portion of those aged 55 and above remain opposed to re-entry.

The demographic favoring rejoining the EU is primarily concentrated among supporters of the Labour, Liberal Democratic, and Green parties. Conversely, voters aligned with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party show strong opposition to rejoining the bloc, reflecting historical pro-Brexit stances.
