Italy Seizes Mafia Assets Worth €200 Million
Italian anti-mafia investigators on Thursday seized assets valued at over €200 million ($217 million) in Sicily, targeting the financial network of deceased Sicilian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. The operation, announced by financial police in Palermo, aimed to dismantle the economic infrastructure linked to the former head of the Cosa Nostra, who died in custody in 2023.
The seized assets, described as proceeds from over four decades of drug trafficking, included villas, companies, and cash. The investigation traced money trails across multiple countries, including Spain, Switzerland, and the Cayman Islands. Authorities arrested three individuals and identified eight firms, including real estate companies, connected to the illicit funds.
Giovanni Melillo, head of Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office, stated the operation was strategically significant beyond the recovered capital. Its objective is to prevent the reformation of the criminal organization and to continue the disintegration process of the Cosa Nostra's economic and social influence. The inquiry involved over 150 officers, utilizing drones, thermal scanners, and IT experts to trace digital assets.
