Russia Intensifies Aerial Attacks Across Ukraine

Russian forces conducted a “massive and virtually nonstop” aerial barrage on Kyiv and other major Ukrainian cities over the past two nights, resulting in at least 12 fatalities and 57 injuries in the capital. Ukrainian officials reported that more than 1,500 drones and over 50 missiles were launched during this period.

The attacks, which commenced on May 14, 2026, targeted residential buildings, a school, and a veterinary clinic in Kyiv, with one strike leveling an apartment building and killing a 15-year-old girl.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 94% of drones were intercepted, but only 73% of missiles were shot down, highlighting a need for improved air defense capabilities. The strikes also impacted cities including Odesa, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Kharkiv. Zelenskyy characterized the attacks as a deliberate terrorist tactic, suggesting Russia timed the offensive to coincide with a U.S. presidential visit to China, aiming to disrupt the geopolitical atmosphere.

The intensified attacks follow recent remarks from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested the conflict might be nearing its conclusion. However, Zelenskyy countered this perspective, asserting that Russia's actions do not indicate an intent to end the war. The Ukrainian president met with European leaders in Bucharest to discuss strategies for achieving a lasting ceasefire.
