Two individuals died from gunshot wounds in Nanyuki, Kenya, on Monday, October 28, during protests against a proposed U.S.-funded Ebola isolation center. The deaths occurred as demonstrators marched near the Laikipia Airbase, where the facility was planned. One victim was reportedly shot near the protest site and died at a local hospital, while the second was brought to the hospital deceased by soldiers, also with a gunshot wound. The circumstances of both deaths remain unclear, and officials have not provided immediate comment.
The protests followed a High Court order on Friday, October 25, temporarily halting the establishment of the 50-bed Ebola treatment facility, which was intended to treat U.S. citizens affected by the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The court extended this suspension on Tuesday, October 29, demanding the government disclose details of the proposed center. Public concern centers on potential cross-border infection risks, despite Kenya having no recorded Ebola cases.
President William Ruto defended the plan on Monday, stating it was a mutual agreement with the U.S. government to support efforts against the virus. However, local community leaders, medical unions, and government watchdogs have voiced opposition, citing public health risks. Despite the court order, military aircraft activity at the airbase suggests ongoing preparations for the facility.
