Trump Pauses 'Project Freedom' in Hormuz U.S. President Donald Trump announced on May 6, 2026, a temporary halt to “Project Freedom,” the American initiative to guide stranded vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This decision was made to facilitate the finalization of a deal with Iran, though the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports will remain active. The announcement follows the conclusion of the initial major U.S. military operation against Iran, dubbed “Epic Fury,” as confirmed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Project Freedom, launched just days prior, aimed to secure passage through the vital waterway. Trump cited requests from Pakistan and other nations, along with perceived military success and progress toward a comprehensive agreement with Iran, as reasons for the pause.
Despite this, only two U.S.-flagged merchant vessels are confirmed to have transited the strait under the project, while hundreds of other commercial ships, carrying approximately 23,000 crew members, remain in the Persian Gulf due to Iran's effective closure of the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is critical for global oil, gas, and other commodity shipments. Its closure has significantly impacted fuel prices and the global economy. The U.S. administration views reopening the strait and addressing Iran's nuclear program as key components of any final agreement. Iran has not yet commented on Trump's announcement, and claims of renewed Iranian drone and missile attacks on the United Arab Emirates have been denied by Tehran.
