Eight Arrested in Brooklyn Immigration Protest Eight individuals were arrested early Sunday morning in Brooklyn, New York, following clashes between protesters and police outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. The arrests occurred during a demonstration against the detention of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian immigrant, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Charges included reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and criminal mischief.
The incident began around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when ICE agents brought Mr.
Okeke to the hospital after he requested medical attention following his arrest for overstaying a visa. Approximately 200 protesters gathered, with some reportedly throwing garbage cans into the street.
Around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, agents removed Mr.
Okeke from the hospital, leading to further confrontation as protesters attempted to block his transfer. Videos depict agents dragging Mr.
Okeke, who was handcuffed, into a waiting vehicle.
The New York Police Department stated it had no prior knowledge or involvement in the ICE operation, adhering to local sanctuary laws that prohibit police assistance in civil deportation cases. Mr. Okeke had previous arrests for assault and drug possession. This event highlights ongoing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local communities in New York City, where activists frequently mobilize against ICE presence.
