Putin Vows Increased Strikes as Russia Boosts Satellite Fleet

President Vladimir Putin revealed Russia's commitment to significantly increase its constellation of domestically manufactured satellites. This strategic development coincides with his declaration to escalate attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure.

Speaking at a Kremlin meeting with military personnel, Putin indicated that Russia has already initiated the deployment of a low-orbit satellite system, drawing comparisons to Starlink. However, he noted that the current count of 16 orbiting craft is presently inadequate for their objectives.

Expanding Space Capabilities

Putin explicitly stated that the immediate challenge lies in scaling up this nascent satellite system. He acknowledged that while the foundational technology has been established and is operational, considerable time and effort are required to expand the constellation substantially. This expansion is understood to be a continuous, high-priority endeavor.

The role of drone warfare has become central to the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian forces have effectively utilized SpaceX’s Starlink network for their operations, including recent strikes on Russian industrial sites. In contrast, Russian unmanned aerial vehicles have faced persistent difficulties in maintaining reliable mobile internet connectivity for their missions.

Boosting Drone Logistics

Addressing logistical improvements for Russian military units, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov outlined ambitious plans for drone procurement. He announced that approximately 20,000 cargo drones are slated for delivery to the Russian army positioned in Ukraine by the end of the year. These drones are designed to carry payloads of up to 40 kilograms, significantly enhancing resupply capabilities.

The projected expansion of Russia's satellite infrastructure, coupled with the enhanced drone logistics, signals a strategic shift aimed at improving communication, reconnaissance, and offensive capabilities. This development could reshape tactical approaches in the conflict and potentially influence the duration and intensity of future engagements against Ukrainian targets.
