Ukraine and Russia conducted a prisoner exchange on Friday, releasing 205 prisoners of war from each side. This exchange occurred hours after rescue operations concluded in Kyiv, where a Russian missile strike on an apartment building killed 24 people, including three girls. Concurrently, Ukrainian drone attacks on the Russian city of Ryazan resulted in four fatalities, including one child, and injured 28 others.

The prisoner swap, described as the initial phase of a larger exchange involving 1,000 individuals per side, included Ukrainian fighters held since 2022, some from the siege of Mariupol and the Chornobyl nuclear plant. The exchange was facilitated by the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Russian officials reported that their released prisoners were transported to Belarus for medical and psychological support.

These developments unfolded as a short-lived ceasefire, which had been in effect from May 9-11, concluded. The ceasefire was followed by intensified Russian strikes across Ukraine, including the missile attack in Kyiv that destroyed 18 apartments. Ukrainian officials reported 1,410 Russian drones and 56 missiles launched within a 24-hour period from May 13-14. Ukrainian forces, in turn, targeted a major oil refinery in Ryazan.
