Pakistan Brokers US-Iran Ceasefire

Pakistan said it helped secure a ceasefire between the United States and Iran on Tuesday, November 12, after more than two weeks of sustained diplomatic engagement aimed at stopping a widening regional confrontation.

Officials described the arrangement as temporary and fragile, but said it reduced the immediate risk of further escalation in the Middle East. The diplomatic push came as the region faced heightened tensions following Israeli strikes on an Iranian gas plant and Iranian strikes on a Saudi Arabian petrochemical complex, developments that raised concerns about a broader conflict.

Pakistani officials said the talks were led by Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir and National Security Adviser Asim Malik. They said the effort drew on Munir’s rapport with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Pakistan’s existing ties with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which were used to keep channels open as negotiations intensified.

Officials said the breakthrough came despite early pessimism inside Pakistan’s government. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had voiced concern earlier in the day about the risk of an escalating conflict, according to the account provided by Pakistani officials.

China was described by Pakistani officials as playing a crucial role in securing Iran’s commitment to the ceasefire. They said China, encouraged by what they called “friendly countries,” directly urged Iran to accept the agreement and provided assurances during the process, including guaranteeing the safety of Iranian leaders while negotiations were underway.

Pakistani officials said the United States was aware of China’s involvement and was comfortable with it. They said Trump later acknowledged China’s influence in bringing Iran to the negotiating table, framing Beijing’s role as a factor that helped move the process forward.

Officials said the ceasefire was finalized by 4:00 AM in Islamabad. Pakistan presented the outcome as a major diplomatic achievement, saying it helped prevent additional destabilization in the region and reduced the risk of spillover effects that could have affected Pakistan’s economy and security.
