NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated on Monday that European leaders have acknowledged the United States' concerns regarding defense contributions, following President Donald Trump's announcement to withdraw 5,000 soldiers from Germany. This development occurred as European criticism mounted over the US-Israel war on Iran, which has impacted the global economy through disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Pentagon confirmed the troop withdrawal on Friday, days after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the Iran conflict. European Union top diplomat Kaja Kallas described the timing as a "surprise," emphasizing the need to strengthen Europe's role within NATO. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart indicated that the 32-nation alliance is working with the US to understand the decision's details.

European nations have increased defense spending commitments amid concerns about US commitment to NATO and the conflict in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated the necessity for Europe to enhance its military capabilities and security spending.
