Mexican Forces Arrest CJNG Commander Audias Flores

Mexican special forces arrested Audias Flores, known as “El Jardinero,” a senior commander of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during an operation in the western state of Nayarit. Officials said the raid took place on Monday and was led by the Mexican Navy.

The Navy said the arrest followed 19 months of surveillance and involved more than 500 troops, six helicopters, and several planes. Authorities said Flores was detained without any exchange of gunfire.

Operation in El Mirador near Puerto Vallarta

Officials said Flores was captured in El Mirador, about 20 km north of Puerto Vallarta. The Navy said he was found while trying to conceal himself in a drainage ditch after his escorts scattered.

Authorities described Flores as a high-ranking CJNG figure and said he had been viewed as a possible successor to the cartel’s former leader, Nemesio Oseguera. The arrest comes after the reported death of Nemesio Oseguera in February, which officials and observers have linked to shifts in the group’s leadership structure.

U.S. reward, charges, and extradition request

U.S. authorities had offered a $5 million reward tied to Flores’s arrest and have sought his extradition, according to officials. U.S. prosecutors have charged him with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and heroin.

Separately, the U.S. Treasury Department designated Flores as a significant foreign narcotics trafficker in 2021. That designation is part of the U.S. government’s sanctions and enforcement framework aimed at disrupting individuals accused of major drug trafficking activity.

Authorities cite operational role inside CJNG

Carlos Olivo, identified as a former U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration assistant special agent, said Flores’s detention could weigh heavily on CJNG operations. Olivo said Flores had control over drug laboratories, smuggling routes, and distribution networks within the United States.

Mexican authorities said they later arrested César Alejandro “N,” whom they identified as a key money launderer for Flores. Officials did not provide additional details on the timing or location of that arrest in the information released.

The Navy has not released further operational specifics beyond the assets used and the circumstances described at the point of capture. It also remains unclear what immediate legal steps will follow in Mexico, including any timetable related to the U.S. extradition request.
