Ukraine Accelerates Mine Clearance Efforts KYIV, Ukraine, April 30 (Reuters) – Ukraine is intensifying its mine clearance operations, integrating advanced technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and unmanned machinery to address the extensive contamination left by the ongoing conflict. Humanitarian organizations, including the HALO Trust, are deploying these innovations to enhance safety and efficiency in demining efforts across the country.
The HALO Trust, a humanitarian non-governmental organization, is utilizing AI to analyze high-resolution drone imagery, identifying mines and explosive remnants with approximately 70% accuracy. This technological integration aims to accelerate a process that is otherwise projected to take over a decade. Additionally, remote-controlled excavators are being employed at demining sites north of Kyiv, allowing operators to clear vast areas more safely and rapidly compared to traditional manual methods.
Despite technological advancements, manual demining remains a critical component of the overall strategy. Deminers, equipped with metal detectors and protective gear, continue to clear areas by hand, driven by personal connections to the conflict and the inherent dangers. According to state-run Demine Ukraine, over 132,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory remain contaminated, with nearly 42,000 square kilometers having been cleared to date.
