France Urges Citizens to Depart Mali

France Advises Immediate Departure from Mali Amid Volatility France has advised its citizens to leave Mali immediately and refrain from travel to the West African nation, citing an “extremely volatile” security situation following coordinated attacks by separatist and Islamist groups. The updated guidance, issued Wednesday, follows reports of explosions and sustained gunfire across Mali, including the capital Bamako, on Saturday.

The French Foreign Ministry recommended that nationals arrange their departure via available commercial flights. Those awaiting departure are instructed to remain indoors, limit movement, and adhere to local authority directives. The United Kingdom has also issued similar advice, urging its citizens to depart Mali promptly via commercial flights if deemed safe, and cautioning against overland travel due to security risks.

The recent surge in violence included an apparent suicide bombing in Kati, which resulted in the death of defense leader Sadio Camara, and separatist forces gaining control of Kidal in the north. These incidents are attributed to the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) in northern regions and the jihadist group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) conducting simultaneous attacks nationwide. Mali's military leader, General Assimi Goïta, stated on Tuesday that the security situation was under control and that the army had inflicted a “violent blow” on the attackers.
