Hackers Cripple University Networks Worldwide

Cyberattack Disrupts Global Academic Platforms An international cyberattack, attributed to the hacking group ShinyHunters, disrupted the Canvas academic sosourcesware platform this week, affecting an estimated 9,000 universities and schools across the United States, Canada, and Australia. The incident, which began earlier this week, led to widespread outages and the postponement of final exams at multiple institutions, including Mississippi State University, Idaho State University, and Penn State University.

The attack involved a ransom note appearing on screens, demanding payment in Bitcoin to prevent the release of stolen data. Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, reported on Thursday that the platform was available for most users, though some universities continued to experience outages into Friday.

Universities like the University of Sydney and the University of British Columbia confirmed their systems were impacted, advising students of the disruptions during a critical end-of-year period.

ShinyHunters, a group previously linked to other high-profile cyberattacks, issued deadlines for ransom payments. The full extent of data compromised and the ongoing negotiations regarding extortion payments remain unclear. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in cloud-based educational platforms and the broader challenge of cybersecurity for academic institutions globally.
