Brain-eating amoeba infection killed 8-year-old Lillian Smart after a Lake Claiborne swim, her family and Louisiana health officials said.
Lillian, from Ruston, died Saturday at a Shreveport-area hospital, one day after her 8th birthday, family spokesman Kyle Roberts said. Roberts said she contracted the fatal infection while swimming in Lake Claiborne, a reservoir in northern Louisiana.

The family announced her death Sunday on the Love for Lillian Facebook page, where relatives had posted updates during her hospitalization. They said the "injuries to her brain were too severe for her little body to recover from."
In a Friday update, posted on Lillian's birthday, the family said doctors had described swelling "as a result of the parasite." The post did not give further detail on her diagnosis, and Roberts declined to share additional information.
The public account leaves several parts of the timeline unresolved. Family members and state officials have not said when Lillian swam in the lake or when her symptoms first appeared.
Warm freshwater carries rare risk
Naegleria fowleri, commonly called the brain-eating amoeba, lives in warm freshwater, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency says infections are usually linked to swimming during summer months, when water temperatures are higher.
The CDC says the organism can also appear in poorly maintained swimming pools, splash pads, recreational water venues and tap water in rare cases. The Louisiana case centers on Lake Claiborne, but the state Health Department has not publicly detailed any broader findings from the reservoir.
The amoeba's nickname comes from the way it attacks brain tissue after water forces the organism through the nose and into the sinuses, according to the CDC. In open water, the microbe feeds on bacteria rather than human tissue.
Unclear timing limits conclusions
The infection's rarity makes each confirmed case a public health marker for families using lakes, reservoirs and other warm-water sites. It also limits what can be concluded from one case without a clearer timeline, water testing information or additional public statements from health authorities.
