Australia Begins Inquiry into Bondi Beach Attack and Antisemitism Australia commenced public hearings on Monday, May 4, into the December 2025 Bondi Beach mass shooting, initiating a national inquiry into escalating antisemitism within the country. The attack, which resulted in 15 fatalities during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration, prompted calls for stricter gun control and enhanced measures against anti-Jewish sentiment, following a series of antisemitic incidents across Australia.

Virginia Bell, a retired judge leading the Royal Commission inquiry, stated that the initial block of hearings would focus on the nature and prevalence of antisemitism in Australia. Bell noted a clear link between the sharp increase in antisemitism in Western countries and events in the Middle East, emphasizing the rapid escalation of hostility towards Jewish Australians.

The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has received over 5,700 public submissions. Witnesses scheduled for Monday include a victim's daughter, community leaders, and a Holocaust survivor. An interim report released on April 30 recommended increased security for Jewish public events and further counter-terrorism and gun reforms. The commission is slated to deliver its final report on December 14, 2026.
