Turkiye, Indonesia Boost Bilateral Ties

Turkiye and Indonesia are expanding cooperation in defense, energy, and emerging technologies following high-level talks in Jakarta on June 2, 2026. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Foreign Minister Sugiono to advance a shared agenda aimed at achieving a $10 billion bilateral trade target. This initiative seeks to deepen economic ties and enhance strategic collaboration between the two nations.

The discussions focused on increasing collaboration in the defense industry, including Turkish involvement in Indonesian procurement and joint development of armored vehicles and drone technology. Energy projects, transport links, artificial intelligence (AI), and the halal sector were also key areas of focus. Bilateral trade between Indonesia and Turkiye increased from $2.1 billion in 2023 to nearly $2.4 billion in 2024, with Indonesia’s trade surplus rising from $940 million to almost $1.5 billion during the same period.

Both countries aim to strengthen their diplomatic prominence within multilateral forums such as the G20, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the United Nations. As emerging market economies, Turkiye and Indonesia share a commitment to the Global South, emphasizing strategic autonomy and a multipolar global order. The expanded cooperation is expected to enhance their influence in shaping international relations.
