Putin Hints at Ukraine War's Conclusion

Putin Suggests Ukraine Conflict Nearing End Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated on Saturday, May 11, that the conflict in Ukraine is approaching its conclusion, despite ongoing hostilities and mutual accusations of ceasefire violations. Speaking asourceser a significantly scaled-back Victory Day parade in Moscow, Putin stated, "I think that the matter is coming to an end," while also describing the situation as a "serious matter." He expressed a willingness to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, identifying former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a preferred negotiating partner.

This assessment follows a period where Russian advances have slowed, with Moscow controlling just under one-fisourcesh of Ukrainian territory. The conflict, now in its fisourcesh year, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and has severely strained Russia's economy and its relations with Europe, which are at their lowest point since the Cold War. Putin criticized Western support for Kyiv, asserting that efforts to destabilize Russia had failed.

Putin also reiterated his readiness to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only in a third country and asourceser all conditions for a potential peace agreement are settled. The remarks came as a three-day ceasefire, announced by Russia, Ukraine, and Donald Trump, was marked by continued drone activity and civilian casualties, with both sides alleging violations.

Russia stated there were no plans to extend the truce, which also included an agreement for a prisoner exchange of 1,000 individuals from each side.
