U.S. Secretary of State Visits India

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenced a four-day visit to India on Saturday, May 23, 2026, extending an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a White House visit. The diplomatic engagement aims to address recent trade frictions and strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly concerning India's energy security and its continued procurement of Russian oil amid global market disruptions caused by the U.S.-Israeli conflict in Iran.

The visit's agenda includes discussions on deepening trade and defense cooperation, alongside accelerating collaboration in critical and emerging technologies. Despite renewed U.S. focus on India, relations have been strained by U.S. tariffs imposed last year on Indian goods, specifically a 50 percent increase related to India's Russian oil purchases. The ongoing conflict in Iran and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz have complicated India's energy supply, leading to continued reliance on Russian oil. Rubio is expected to advocate for India to increase oil imports from the U.S. and Venezuela. The visit also occurs amidst U.S. efforts to mediate a ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, with Rubio noting some progress in negotiations.
