Europe Warned Against Underestimating Russia

European leaders are increasingly warning of a growing threat from Russia, urging increased defense spending and new security pacts, despite some public skepticism regarding Moscow's military capabilities. This assessment follows Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, and has seen Russia seize less than 20 percent of Ukrainian territory over more than four years.

The perceived underperformance of Russian forces in Ukraine is attributed more to Ukrainian resistance than inherent Russian weakness. Ukraine's defense has come at a significant cost, including hundreds of thousands of casualties and widespread displacement, highlighting the severity of the conflict.

Despite battlefield setbacks, Russia's military has grown significantly since 2022 and has adapted to modern warfare, particularly in drone technology. Russia is now a leading developer in drone warfare, capable of mass bombardments using strike drones, cruise, and ballistic missiles. European defense capabilities are reportedly lagging, with Russia outproducing Europe in key munitions like artillery shells and cruise missiles, posing a long-term challenge to European security.
