Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on May 6, 2026, that Ukraine will retaliate against Russia following alleged breaches of a proposed ceasefire. Zelenskyy stated that Russia responded to Kyiv's ceasefire initiative with continuous strikes and attacks across Ukraine, including 1,820 violations within the first 10 hours of the proposed truce.
These violations reportedly included attacks on civilian infrastructure and drone strikes, such as a kindergarten in the northern Sumy region, which resulted in two fatalities.
Kyiv had proposed a ceasefire commencing at midnight on May 6, aiming to assess the feasibility of a genuine cessation of hostilities. This followed Russia's earlier announcement of a two-day "Victory Day truce" scheduled for May 8-9, coinciding with its annual Victory Day parade. Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine's response would be determined by the ongoing situation, emphasizing that Russia had received a clear diplomatic proposal from Kyiv.
The Ukrainian president further suggested that the Kremlin was aware of the channels to engage with Ukraine or its partners for diplomatic resolution. However, he implied that a specific individual in Moscow prioritized the Victory Day parade over peace, indicating a lack of genuine interest in ending the conflict. The situation escalates ahead of Russia's significant May 9 Victory Day celebrations.
