UK Terror Threat Level Raised to Severe
The UK raised its terror threat to severe following an antisemitic attack and broader extremist concerns, indicating a highly likely terrorist attack.

The United Kingdom's Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) elevated the national terror threat level from substantial to severe on Thursday, November 7, 2024, indicating a terrorist attack is considered highly likely. This decision follows an antisemitic attack in Golders Green, North London, where two Jewish men were seriously injured on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the increase, noting that while the Golders Green incident contributed, the overall rise in threat is also driven by a broader increase in Islamist and Extreme Right Wing terrorist threats from individuals and small groups within the UK. The severe threat level is the second highest on the UK's five-tier system.
This marks the first time the UK has been at a severe threat level since February 2022, when it was lowered from severe to substantial following incidents including the Liverpool Women's Hospital bombing and the killing of Member of Parliament David Amess in 2021. The 45-year-old suspect in the Golders Green attack remains in police custody, and the two victims, aged 34 and 76, are in stable condition.
