Former President Donald Trump utilized the Defense Production Act (DPA) on Friday to facilitate increased offshore oil extraction in Southern California. This action aims to mitigate oil price fluctuations attributed to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The executive order specifically targets the acceleration of permitting processes for Sable Offshore Corp., allowing the company to resume operations at the Santa Ynez complex.

The DPA, a Cold War-era statute, grants the President authority to direct industrial production for national defense. Its invocation in this instance is intended to circumvent California's state regulations and environmental objections that have previously hindered oil production activities. Sable Offshore Corp. acquired the Santa Ynez Unit assets from ExxonMobil in February 2024, setting the stage for this federal intervention.
