Trump Announces De-escalation in Lebanon Conflict
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday, June 1, 2026, that he had engaged with the Iran-aligned Lebanese militia group Hezbollah through intermediaries, securing a commitment from the group to cease attacks against Israel. Concurrently, Trump stated he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who agreed to halt any Israeli troop movements towards southern Lebanon and recall forces already en route.
This development follows a period of heightened conflict in Lebanon, which has resulted in the displacement of over 1.2 million Lebanese citizens due to Israeli strikes and evacuation orders since March 2. Hezbollah initiated rocket and drone attacks into Israel on that date in support of its ally, Iran. The U.S. government designates Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
A Lebanese official confirmed that Hezbollah, via Lebanon's parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, had communicated its willingness to stop attacks on northern Israel in exchange for Israel refraining from striking Beirut and its suburbs. The latest escalation saw Israeli troops seize the 900-year-old Beaufort Castle and a strategic ridge in southern Lebanon on Saturday, following one of the most intense days of Hezbollah fire towards northern Israel since an April ceasefire.
