Oppenheimer reported on Wednesday that SpaceX's Starlink satellite broadband unit is poised to disrupt the $1.6 trillion U.S. communications industry, with legacy providers like AT&T, Verizon Communications, and T-Mobile facing significant risks. The brokerage increased its 2035 space revenue estimate to $800 billion from an earlier $500 billion, ahead of SpaceX's anticipated IPO this month.

The expansion of Starlink is expected to intensify pressure on cable firms, which are already experiencing subscriber losses. Oppenheimer projects that traditional broadband providers could see accelerated declines in subscribers and revenue as Starlink entrenches itself in critical applications, reducing churn and enhancing its pricing power. The firm also raised its 2030 estimates for U.S. broadband subscribers to 15 million from 10 million.

SpaceX's growth could also extend into the half-a-trillion-dollar handset market, as the company aims to develop alternatives to traditional smartphones. SpaceX is reportedly targeting a $1.75 trillion valuation for its Nasdaq debut on June 12, with its valuation underpinned by Starlink's over 10 million subscribers and its transformative launch business.
