Regulatory Warning Issued to Save the Children Over Yemen Governance Failures

The Charity Commission for England and Wales has issued an official warning to Save the Children following a two-year investigation into management failures at its Yemen office. The inquiry concluded that inadequate governance and oversight exposed staff to significant security risks, culminating in the 2023 death of a senior security director while in detention.

Regulators identified substantial policy breaches, a lack of accountability, and a failure to address whistleblower reports. The investigation highlighted a negative internal culture that marginalized staff and ignored escalating security threats in the region.

In response, the organization has acknowledged these governance shortcomings and implemented new leadership and safety protocols. The charity has also closed its North Yemen office, though reports indicate that at least one other staff member remains in detention. The regulator has mandated that the organization must now ensure sufficient resources are dedicated to the protection of personnel operating in high-risk environments.
