Russia Pressures Armenia Over EU Alignment

Russia has warned Armenia that its pursuit of closer ties with the European Union could result in the cessation of subsidized Russian oil and gas supplies. This warning, issued by President Vladimir Putin, precedes a parliamentary election in Armenia on June 3, 2026, where the pro-Western Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's party is projected to win. Armenia, a landlocked nation of 3 million people with historical ties to Russia, relies heavily on Moscow for economic support.

The Russian government's stance reflects its broader efforts to maintain geopolitical influence amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Moscow perceives a concerted effort by Western nations, including the European Union and the United States, to diminish its traditional alliances. This pressure extends beyond Armenia to other regions where Russia has historically held sway, such as Central Asia, the Balkans, and parts of Africa.

Armenia's recent actions, including signing a partnership agreement with the U.S. in May 2026 and passing legislation in April 2025 to facilitate EU accession, have heightened Moscow's concerns. Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, expressed deep concern over Armenia's rapprochement with the Euro-Atlantic community. In response, Russia has temporarily banned imports of Armenian goods, threatened to cut off cheap energy and rough diamond exports, and suggested Armenia's potential expulsion from the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union.
