Police Outgunned in Bondi Attack
Sydney, Australia – New South Wales (NSW) police officers were outmatched by assailants armed with rifles during a December 14 attack at Bondi Beach, according to testimony presented to a royal commission on antisemitism and social cohesion. Deputy Commissioner David Hudson stated that officers, equipped with 9mm Glock pistols, faced significant risk against long-arm weapons during the incident. This disparity prompted an accelerated plan to establish an Armed Response Command.
The commission heard that two gunmen opened fire from a footbridge at Archer Park, using a high-powered rifle and shotguns, killing 15 people at a Hanukkah celebration. Within 30 seconds, 11 individuals were shot, 10 fatally. Police subdued the attackers after seven minutes and 41 seconds, with one assailant killed and another wounded and taken into custody. Two officers sustained serious injuries.
In response to the incident, NSW Police are expediting the formation of an Armed Response Command, comprising 210 officers equipped with long-arm weapons. This unit, initially projected to take two years, is now expected to be fully staffed within 12 months. The command aims to provide a more rapid and effective response to high-risk situations, enhancing community protection and officer safety.
