China, Pakistan Deepen Strategic Ties

China and Pakistan have established a new broad consensus to deepen their strategic partnership, focusing on enhancing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and developing the Gwadar port. This agreement was reached during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Beijing, concluding on May 25, 2026, following meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

The two nations committed to advancing CPEC, a key component of China's Belt and Road Initiative, through projects such as upgrading the 1,300 km Karakoram Highway. Pakistan also pledged to implement targeted security measures to safeguard Chinese workers and investments within its borders, addressing Beijing's concerns regarding past attacks.

Furthermore, both countries affirmed their support for a multipolar world order and opposed unilateral actions by other nations. Pakistan reiterated its adherence to the 'one China principle,' recognizing Taiwan as an inalienable part of China. The joint statement also noted China's appreciation for Pakistan's mediation efforts in the US-Israel war on Iran and their mutual commitment to a five-point initiative for Middle East peace.
