NextDC shares slide 44% after revenue forecast cut

NextDC shares shed 44% on Wednesday after the Australian data centre operator cut revenue forecasts for the year ahead and put future developments on hold.

The company said delays to expected revenue had pushed income out of the current forecast period. The stock move erased nearly half its market value in one session and added to weaker sentiment around companies tied to AI infrastructure.

NextDC revenue delay hits shares

NextDC operates data centres, a sector that has drawn investor attention as cloud and artificial-intelligence demand lifts expectations for power, land and server capacity. A lower revenue outlook changes the timing of that investment case: delayed customer income can leave near-term costs exposed while the expected demand arrives later.

The development pause also matters for suppliers and rivals. If NextDC slows expansion, construction contractors, power providers and equipment vendors face a weaker near-term pipeline from one Australian operator.

If the delay is company-specific, competitors may face less pricing pressure; if it points to wider customer deferrals, the read-through is weaker for listed data-centre and AI infrastructure names.

For global equities, the mechanism is sentiment rather than macro demand. AI-linked stocks have traded on expectations that data-centre spending will keep rising. If investors start marking down the timing of that revenue, valuations that depend on fast capacity growth become harder to defend.

The next test is Wednesday, Oct. 21 trading, when investors will look for whether the selloff stays contained to NextDC or spreads across regional AI infrastructure shares.
